So. On Sunday Benjamin and i had a dilemma. We had to remove his spigot bearing (brass bush) from his SR18 so we could perform ultra dodgy grinding job to fit input of transmission. However we had to remove the bush first. So first we tried using a finger. Then a screwdriver. Then went looking for a proper bearing puller.

The trick was to remove the bush without cracking or scoring it rendering it unusable.

Usually a bearing puller would do the job well, however they can be expensive and we couldn't find one anyway.

So I popped in to see an old mate at the gap and we came up with an idea as good as sliced bread. . . well in fact IT IS sliced bread.

With this idea in mind we got to work. We were at the point of trying anything to get the bearing out and this seemed crazy enough for two slightly random people to try. So we did.

1st step get your tools.

Then take bread

and go as follows ...

And there you have it. By hammering the bread in the hole it pushed the bush out. When the bread compresses it has no where to go therefore creating pressure. This pressure is exerted on the rear side of the bush. And beleive it or not, enough pressure is generated to push the bush out of the hole.

We used 1/3 of a piece of bread and removed the bush in UNDER 3 MINUTES!!

A proper bearing puller would take about that time. and cost you around $40.

Our solution, the best thing since sliced bread.

I can't believe how well that worked. You can actually see in the IMGP1505.jpg file (5th from the bottom) the bush starting to slide out around the aligning tool.

An aligning tool is really good for this actually because the snugger the fit inside the bush the more bread you'll have pushing against the bush instead of squeezing back out around whatever else you might use to punch it in.

This is pretty common practice in the auto trade actually. I know a mate uses a grease gun under pressure to hydraulic bushes out all the time.

Saves time trying to machine them out.
