while we're at it. things u'll need to do to convert ur engine to turbo
1. bolt turbo onto exhaust manifold
2. get sealed airtight piping leading from compressor inlet to ur intake manifold
3. connect exhaust pipe to turbine discharge
4. upgrade your injectors (or jet your carby if ur uber oldschool)
5. upgrade your fuel pump
6. possibley upgrade your airflow meter and ecu
7. tap 2 holes in your sump and connect the turbos oil lines
8. hook up some kinda boost control bleed valve wastegate all depends on your dodgeyness
9. hook up boost gauge so that if u find yourself running 28psi on stock internals u can quickly stop the car
9 easy steps to some PhAt Bo0sT.
note: this is just a basic system and most mechanic shops will laugh at you for suggesting it

This might also help people. I went here when I didn't know *ANYTHING* about how a turbo worked and within 15 minutes I understood all the principles pretty solidly. Highly recommend it if you're looking to learn from scratch.

Yeah, but it explains the basics. BOV/WG is getting more technical than you need to for the basics.

well i think it should be in the basics. at least a wastegate. you kinda need to know hopw to control boost pressure. And its only 1 extra line on the diagram

pfft.. wingers....
a waste gate is set at a specific pressure from factory (eg 7psi) and as soon as the pressure in the inlet side reaches that ammount it pushes a diaphram that opens the gate istself that releases excess exhaust gas so u have a constant pressure.... otherwise if u didnt have one pressure would just continue to increase with the revs til something go's bang....
and a boost controller is just an ajustable vent put in the line between the manifold and the waste gate diaphram to vent pressure to atmosphere.. to somewhat trick the gate into opening at a higher pressure
eg: gate opens at 7psi... controller vents 5psi to atmosphere along the line so motor/turbo needs to make 12psi before the gate opens
7+5=12
get it

um not all turbo's need wastegates.
Some of the mercedes trucks i work on have manufactured imperfections in the turbo to only allow 80% effeciency therefore it can only produce a set amount of boost depending on max rpm of the engine.
Exremely fk up way of doin it but it works.

lol. yeh lucky i didnt say how land rover used to do it with springs on the manifold bolts to allow it to push away from the head when boost gets to high. lol

Can you open a thread called turbo's, the technical side or something? Cos that whole springs-on-the-manifold thing sounds interesting...
BTW where does a wastegate vent exaust to? I'm guessing out the normal exhaust pipe, basically just a bypass around the turbo?

well the manifold thing aint that great.
Basically the turbo provodes boost to inlet manifold. So they put spring bolts on manifold instead of normal bolts.
When boost in manifold gets too high, the pressure pushes the manifold away from the head and leaks out to atmosphere. Therefore boost is controlled by the springs used on the bolts.
Totaly fkd way to control boost because if the manifold sticks to the head then boost will spike.
Like the spike i used to kill that gremlin with that was living in my boot. Yeh. he got fkd up good.
(((sorry. had to add something) but the gremlin is now a mantle peice so its all good) he's also for sale on e-bay)
